Narrow reed mace

Narrow reed mace

Commonly called bulrushes, latin names include Typha angustifolia, Typha gracilis, and Typha lugdunensis.  This is a smaller version of the Reed mace, though less vigorous, its pointed rhizome can still puncture pond liners so should be contained. The reed like foliage is topped by smooth cigar shaped spikes Jun-Aug. A valuable native plant which provides egg laying sites for adult dragonfly, also perching and roosting sites. The larvae use the stems to climb out of the water
