Astrantia major (Greater masterwort) is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial which grows up to 90cm tall. It sends up tall thin stems bearing umbels of tiny white flowers surrounded by green tipped and slightly veined white flower bracts from June to August. The foliage is dark green and it is excellent for cut flowers.
Dead head regularly to encourage flowering and prevent self-seeding, and cut back to near the ground after it’s finished its first flowering to get a second flush. It is particularly favoured by bees and designated as a ‘Plant for Pollinators’ by the RHS. Goes well with Astrantia major ‘Gill Richardson Group.’
