Barley straw pond logs help to control all types of algae and blanket weed and are a natural product, safe for fish plants and all other aquatic pond life.  These logs are  packed loosely in mesh nets which allow water to flow through and oxygenation to ensure efficient breakdown of the barley straw.  It is this process of decomposition that releases natural chemicals into the pond that help inhibit the growth of blanket weed and other types of pond algae.

As much blanket weed as possible should be removed prior to application and during the 2-3 weeks it takes for the process to become fully active (longer in the colder months).  New logs should be added every 4 months, with the netting from the old log and any remaining rotted straw being removed at the same time.

This is a  small bale which will treat up to 9,000 litres for 4 months.  The straw is wrapped in hessian netting which is fully biodegradable.

To calculate the volume of your pond:

Square/rectangle = length in metres x width in metres x depth in metres x 1,000 (so a 3m x 2m x 50cm deep pond would be 3 x 2 x 0.5 x 1,000 = 3,000 litre)

Circular = radius in metres x radius in metres x depth in metres x 3.142 x 1,000 (so a pool with a diametre of 3m and depth of 75cm would be 1.5 x 1.5 x 3.142 x 0.75 x 1,000 = 5,302 litres)
