Giant rhubarb (Gunnera manicata) is a magnificent plant which can grow up to 3 metres tall with a 4 metre spread, making an excellent waterside display. If you don’t have the space for this try the Chinese rhubarb (Rheum palmatum) which is from the same family but a smaller, or the Indian rhubarb (Darmera peltata) .
Not to be confused with Gunnera tinctoria, which is also known as Giant rhubarb, which is often sold as manicata but is smaller and invasive: it is listed under Schedule 9 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as a non-native invasive species, not to be disposed of or planted in the wild. The easiest way to tell the difference apart from size is that the inflorescences of the tinctoria are red whereas the manicata’s are green.
