Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis) is one of the largest native ferns Osmunda regalis makes an ideal pond-side plant but needs room to grow as it can eventually reach 2m in height with a 1-2m spread. A robust hardy deciduous fern which forms a large clump of open airy arching fronds coppery-red when young with opposing pairs of glossy green narrow leaves. It produces two types of fronds: taller sterile and shorter (20-50cm) fertile fronds which have brown spore bearing leaves in summer adding interest. It has an RHS AGM.
