This tall waterside perennial has long narrow leaves which can be mistaken for Iris pseudacorus until you smell the sweet smelling rhizome. If you crush the leaves they have a citrussy orange fragrance. It produces a small horn-like green flower in summer gradually turning brown. It was introduced in the 16th century and was commonly used as a sweet smelling floor covering. A strong architectural pond marginal plant that provides a good backdrop for more showy specimens, also good for emerging dragonfly nymphs which use the erect stems to climb out of the water. Thrives in sunny positions but also happy in shade
