Water starwort (Callitriche stagnalis) is an excellent evergreen native evergreen oxygenator which grows underwater and spreads to the surface forming mats of densely packed small green leaves. Can be quite vigorous but can be easily thinned out if it takes up too much of the pond surface.
Submerged leaves are star-shaped and change to very small rosettes of eliptical leaves on the surface. Starwort gives good surface cover early in the season and produces insignificant tiny white flowers during summer. A haven for wildlife the leaves hold spawn well and is particularly favoured by newts.
Our Starwort is grown shallow and supplied in small bunches in an elastic band. It can just be dropped onto the surface of the pond after the band has been removed and should establish a nice raft. Alternatively it could be planted in a 1 litre aquatic basket but should be kept shallow until well established, which can take a while, and then dropped deeper. Any foliage that has grown above the surface will tend to die back and be replaced by submerged foliage that will eventually reach the surface.
Planting position: Full sun or partial shade submerged in depths from 20cm up to 100cm
Form: Bare root or 1 litre in an aquatic basket
