Water starwort (Callitriche stagnalis) is an excellent evergreen native evergreen oxygenator which can grow underwater spreading to the surface forming mats of densely packed small green leaves. It grows best in shade or part shade.
Submerged leaves are star-shaped and change to very small rosettes of eliptical leaves on the surface. Starwort gives good surface cover early in the season and produces insignificant tiny white flowers during summer. A haven for wildlife the leaves hold spawn well and is particularly favoured by newts and tadpoles.
Our Starwort is grown shallow and supplied in small bunches which can be dropped onto the surface of the pond and should establish a nice raft. Alternatively it could be planted in a 1 litre aquatic basket although it can be difficult to establish this way: it should be kept shallow until well established, which can take a while, and then dropped deeper. Any foliage that has grown above the surface will tend to die back and be replaced by submerged foliage that will eventually reach the surface.
