Shuttlecock fern

Shuttlecock fern

Also known as the Ostrich fern, or Ostrich-feather fern this very graceful fern has long arching lime-green fronds that gives rise to its names.  The green deciduous sterile fronds reach heights of 100-150cm surrounding shorter fertile fronds (40-60cm) which develop and ripen brown in the Autumn, persisting through the Winter.  A striking archictectural addition to any bog garden, it forms groups or colonies by sending out underground runners from its rhizome.  These are easily lifted for thinning or replanting.
