Shuttlecock fern, also known as the Ostrich fern or Ostrich-feather fern, is a very graceful fern with long arching lime-green fronds that gives rise to its various names. The green deciduous sterile fronds reach heights of 100-150cm surrounding shorter fertile fronds (40-60cm) which develop and ripen brown in the Autumn persisting through the Winter. A striking archictectural addition to any bog garden, it forms groups or colonies by sending out underground runners from its rhizome. These are easily lifted for thinning or replanting.
