Pepper grass

A native oxygenator which is declining rapidly in the wild and classified as vulnerable and protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.  A small plant this is actually a type of creeping fern, with hair-like leaves that unfurl from tight coils rising from a creeping stem.  Also known as Pillwort, with the 'pill' referring to the tiny round spore cases at the bases of the stems.  Slow growing it reaches a height of 10-15cm.  Happy in ponds with fluctuating water levels and moving water.

Planting position: 0-15cm, pond margins or wet soil, prefers slightly acidic conditions
