Chinese rhubarb ‘Atrosanguineum’ (Rheum palmatum ‘Atrosanguineum’) is very similar to the standard Rheum palmatum a majestic ornamental rhubarb for those that don’t quite have the space for a Gunnera. Huge rose-purple leaves, the topside of which fade to green after flowering, with purple-red undersides 75-90cm long form a large clump from which tall stems up to 2m high emerge bearing panicles of cherry-red flowers. Note that unlike garden rhubarb this is not edible and is poisonous if consumed in large quantities.
