Norfolk reed (Phragmites australis), also known as Common reed, is a very vigorous native plant which is often used in filtration systems. It is best not to plant it in lined ponds as the roots can pierce the liner. As the roots spread quickly it is a useful plant for stabilising pond margins, but is only for the large ponds with deep water areas that can contain its spread. It will tend to out-compete other species and form monocultures in areas where it is allowed to spread unchecked.
Height: 2-4m
Planting position: Pond marginal shelf up to 50cm deep; or very wet soil
Form: 9cm pots
